At this time of year I always think of Ecclesiastes chapter three. They are verses we all know and we are consistently reminded of God’s word as each year passes. There is a Time for Everything!

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:

2 a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot,

3 a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build,

4 a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,

Its such a wonderful text to think about the work of God in the lives of His children. He reminds us of time on earth by these simple things called days. They add up so quickly to months and seasons and then the year is done once again. Time is one thing you can never change and you can never get back. We cannot live in the future or the past, only in the here and now, the present time. We have much to do IN THIS time God has given us. As we just read in verse two, we should ALL be mindful” a time to be born and a time to die”.

We who are born of the flesh live in this world, seeing things only with eyes for this world. Sin filled eyes looking out knowing that we live and then we die. Many have a philosophy of eat drink and be merry for tomorrow we die. Its a narrow view of the present, the past can be ignored the future cannot be seen. There is very little big picture for their time as it passes by day by day.

But we who were chosen by God and loved by God look at our time in a new light. We want to know our past to see how the saints lived and proclaimed the work of God through his prophets and judges. We see how broken and fallen they were, and we see the redemption God worked out for their sinful lives. He sent his Son Jesus to be our Immanuel. We are connected to Jesus through the waters of baptism which killed our sinful nature and raised up to a new life in Christ. For us a death actually brings us life. We die to our sinful flesh and live our lives to Christ.

Having been born again, we see a real urgency in our time. We no longer look at the world the same, we see the world and our time in it, very differently. We live our days in faith, we share our faith in what we do and what we say. Others see our time used for the glory of God and want to know about this grace we love so much.

The time is here to do what God calls us to do. To live in Faith! So use this time given to you this year as you Honor Jesus and serve others.
